Abang Johari says party's quest for devolution of powers from the federal government will continue.
PETALING JAYA: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) will not be joining the Pakatan Harapan coalition after all.
In a statement released following the party’s supreme council meeting today, PBB said it would continue to champion the cause of protecting Sarawak’s interests as a “united coalition of Sarawak-based parties” and in fighting for the devolution of powers.
PBB is the main party in the ruling Barisan Nasional state government, which also includes Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).
In the recently-concluded 14th general election, Sarawak BN only retained 19 parliamentary seats, losing six seats to DAP, PKR and independent candidates.
However, PBB president and Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg said the party was still committed to moving forward on a strong united front in the interest of the people in Sarawak.
“Our 19 MPs, of which 13 are from PBB Sarawak, will be our effective voice fighting for Sarawak interests in the Dewan Rakyat.
“They are also committed to ensure that the needs of the people of Sarawak will be supported by the present ruling government, in the interests of Malaysia as a whole,” Abang Johari said.
He added that Sarawak BN will continue to fight for Sarawak interests first.
“We are determined to pursue and ensure that our quest for devolution of powers from the federal government continues.
“We we will enhance efforts to take back our infringed rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the Federal Constitution and all relevant laws.”
It was reported last week that Sarawak governor Abdul Taib Mahmud held a meeting with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and government adviser Daim Zainuddin.
Following the meeting, speculation was rife that the Sarawak BN parties would quit BN and join PH instead. However, that was later denied by the state government.
Abang Johari reiterated that the trust of the people of Sarawak in the 2016 state election would be maintained.
“We will, with full dedication, integrity and sincerity, continue to serve the people of Sarawak wholeheartedly to fulfil our promises in our 2016 state election manifesto.”
