Shafie keeps promise on new ministries

In naming new state Cabinet, Shafie announces two important ministries he had promised to create — education and health.

Madius Tangau, who led Upko out of BN, was made one of six nominated assemblymen and named commerce and industrial minister.

KOTA KINABALU: Shafie Apdal has kept his promise to introduce two important new ministries and also revamp the state government structure.

He had promised to form the education ministry and health ministry if Warisan won the state election.

True to his word, Shafie today named state DAP chairman Stephen Wong as the health and people’s wellbeing minister while Sindumin assemblyman Yusuf Yakob was named education and innovation minister.

Shafie, who was sworn in as Sabah chief minister last Saturday, took the finance ministry portfolio. A day after the May 9 general election, Musa Aman had also been sworn in as the chief minister.

Shafie also named Api-Api assemblywoman and Sabah PKR chief Christina Liew, Sulabayan assemblyman Jaujan Sambakong and Tuaran MP Madius Tangau as his deputy chief ministers.

Liew will also hold the tourism, culture and environment ministry while Jaujan is the state’s new local government and housing minister.

Tangau, who led the United Pasok Momogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) out of BN following last week’s general election, was made one of Shafie’s six nominated assemblymen to enable him to be named as state minister.

Tangau will also take on the role of commerce and industrial minister another newly-established ministry under Shafie’s administration.

Tanjung Aru assemblyman Junz Wong was appointed the agriculture and food industry minister.

Shafie’s right-hand man and Melalap assemblyman Peter Anthony was given the infrastructure development ministry while Upko’s Kadamaian assemblyman Ewon Benedick will lead the rural development ministry.

Shafie also formed the law and native affairs ministry, appointing former shariah court judge and Pantai Manis assemblyman Aidi Moktar as the minister.

Tanjong Papat assemblyman Frankie Poon, who defeated former deputy chief minister Raymond Tan, was named Sabah’s new youth and sports minister.

With the creation of the four new ministries, several portfolios under the previous administration were abolished.

These were the community development and consumer affairs ministry, special tasks ministry, industrial development ministry and the resource development and information technology ministry.

Shafie also named 18 assistant ministers.
