Yay to free stuff.
If there are two things we Malaysians love more than anything in the entire world, it's free stuff and not getting stuck behind a driver who forgot to top up his Touch 'n Go card in the SmartTAG lane.The good news is, we would have an solution to that by early next year.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi told The New Straits Times that the government is planning to distribute the radio frequency identification (RFID) tags by early next year.
According to Ab Aziz, the government is currently in talks with Touch ‘n Go to distribute the RFID tags to all vehicles registered in Malaysia for free.
Ab Aziz said the new RFID system should be ready for use by next year as well. The implemetation of the system will be carried out in stages, he added.
Touted as a more advanced version of the SmartTAG device and Touch 'n Go card, using RFID tags will apparently make paying for toll faster and more effortless.
Similar to having your groceries scanned by a barcode scanner at the supermarket, an overhead bridge would scan the RFID tag via electromagnetic waves as you're passing through the toll gate.
Heck, you don't even have to hold up the device like how most of us do when we pass through the SmartTAG lane!
Hopefully this will also solve the problem of drivers forgetting to top up their account, although we're not holding our breath.
