UM makes it to Asia’s top 50 universities

Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings put UM at 46th this year, up from its position of 59th last year.

Universiti-MalayaalayaPETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s oldest university, Universiti Malaya (UM), has climbed to 46th place on the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2018.

This is its highest ever position on the index, up 13 spots from its rank of 59th last year, and the first time it has made it to the top 50 entries.

According to THE, universities are judged across all of their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

Singapore’s National University of Singapore (NUS) claimed top spot for the third year in a row, followed by China’s Tsinghua University and Peking University.

This year’s index included just over 350 institutions, up from 300 last year.

The universities came from 25 countries and regions in Asia.

Other Malaysian varsities which made it on the index included Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar), whose 99th position put it in the top 100 ranking for the first time ever.

Universiti Teknologi Petronas meanwhile improved its ranking from within 141-150th last year to a joint 114th position this year.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) also made it to the top 350 in Asia.
