Dzulkifli Ahmad defends investigation into former minister.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission today defended its investigation into Shafie Apdal, stressing it had nothing to do with the former minister leading an opposition party in Sabah.
Its chief commissioner, Dzulkifli Ahmad, said the investigations were carried out professionally and people should not question the timing of the probe by the anti-graft agency.
“The issue here is whether there was corruption or not,” he said at a conference earlier today.
Dzulkifli also said the decision to investigate the former Umno vice-president was taken based on the statements recorded and information they received.
“Whether we took action on it last year or this year or the year after, the fact remains that we will take action. But if there are no corrupt practices, then we won’t do anything.”
In October, MACC detained the Parti Warisan Sabah president over the alleged misappropriation of RM1.5 billion in funds from rural development projects in Sabah.
The former federal rural and regional development minister was detained as part of its investigations into several projects under his then ministry between 2009 and 2015.
The RM1.5 billion was said to be part of RM7.5 billion allocated for water, electricity and road infrastructure development projects.
Dzulkifli said they had solid reasons to investigate the former minister.
He asked the public to be patient and went on to cite its probe into the Sabah State Water Department.
He explained that even though that case had happened years ago, it was still investigated by MACC.
“We seized close to RM117 million in cash, making it one the biggest seizures in Malaysian history.”
