Najib is very focused on his narrative, says Nurul Izzah.

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR’s vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar today said Prime Minister Najib Razak’s speeches have been focused on winning the hearts of the rakyat and the opposition should follow suit.

She said the opposition’s challenge was to also give out clear explanations on issues affecting the people.

“(Look at) the contents of all the prime minister’s speeches. Does he care about scandals? Does he care about investigations (carried out by the US Department of Justice on 1MDB)?

“He is very focused on his narrative,” she said during a forum titled 3-Cornered Fight: A Win for Pakatan Harapan today.

Nurul Izzah said the opposition’s challenge was to give out clear explanations on matters where the rakyat had been wronged and the country had been victimised.

“If people out there don’t understand how the process happened, they are not able to empathise with us,” she told the audience at the four-hour talk.

The Lembah Pantai MP said if Pakatan Harapan could explain the narrative clearly to the people, it would win the people’s hearts.

“They (voters) dont care about your problems. Why? Because they have their own difficulties.

“And they look at us, representatives, to find solutions. And to tell them that it is solved.”

The way to Putrajaya is through kampung roads, not highways

Amanah’s Dzulkefly Ahmad said the opposition would need to win the rural votes to win Putrajaya.

The Amanah’s strategic director also believed that if PH could win 100 seats in the next election in the peninsula, they could convince Sabah and Sarawak to join them.

“There is a snowballing effect. The fact is, when you trigger the tipping point, anything above 100, we will get Sabah and Sarawak to come over to us,” he said.

Umno members are bipolar

Another speaker, PPBM’s committee member Tariq Ismail, said his party was trying to garner support from Umno members.

That’s because he said Umno members were less keen to talk about issues.

“But when you use emotions, then they will listen.

“Every time we ask them, how is the economy, what about the 1MDB issues, they will say ‘big keris, long live Umno’,” he said.

Tariq said that it was crucial for all parties in PH to work together to reach out to the rural voters.

This is because PPBM could not do it on their own, he said.

“We need to get the message across, that is ‘Look, change can happen,” he said.

Three-corner fight will not hurt PH

DAP election strategist Ong Kian Ming believed that a three-cornered fight would not hurt PH despite certain quarters claiming otherwise.

Ong believes that three-cornered fights will not hurt PH.

He said this was because the opposition needed to achieve two things.

The first was to give the rakyat two very clear choices.

“We have to let the voters know that if you want to keep the status quo, you vote for BN.

“If you want to change the status quo, there is only one option for you to choose, which is Harapan,” he said.

He also disagreed with other analysts who referred to the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections as examples of how PH might suffer in three-cornered fights.

He said the by-elections did not involve the changing of the state or federal government.

“But in the next general election, we have to make the choice very clear, that it is either BN or Pakatan Harapan,” he said.
