Hindraf wants action taken against Attorney-General for not doing anything about the death of Sasikumar Selvam in Johor which was ruled to be homicide.
The grandmother of Sasikumar Selvam filed a police report after he was found hanged in his prison cell in Kluang.
PETALING JAYA: Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has been urged to instruct the police to investigate the death of Sasikumar Selvam in custody in 2015, where foul play was suspected to have been covered up by the authorities.
Hindraf chairman P Waythamoorthy claimed that Attorney-General Apandi Ali did not take any action although the Johor Bahru coroner had ruled in November last year the case as one of homicide.
Sasikumar died while serving a 10-year jail sentence for armed robbery of a mini-market. He was found hanged in his cell in Kluang Prison and the Prisons Department and the police said an investigation had concluded that there was no foul play.
His grandmother lodged a police report three days later on May 25, 2015 stating that she suspected foul play.
Last November, the Johor Bahru coroner, Kamarudin Kamsun, held that Sasikumar had not committed suicide and ruled instead that it was a case of homicide.
Waythamoorthy told FMT that based on conversations with Sasikumar’s family, he believed that the death was linked to an alleged drug ring in Kluang Prison which housed nearly 5,000 inmates.
He also urged that the police take action against Apandi for failing to act on the case. Waythamoorthy had previously lodged a police report against Apandi.
“I can’t understand why Apandi didn’t act on this obvious miscarriage of justice. I hope the police can investigate this,” he said. “He should not continue to be an obstacle to justice and resign immediately so that another person can take up the role and ensure that justice is delivered to the people as it should,” he added.
Apandi’s three-year contract was to have expired on July 27 but the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) government last month gave him an extension of three years. Last week, Apandi was told to go on a 30-day unrecorded leave.
The Solicitor-General, Engku Nor Faizah Engku Atek, is standing in for him.
