American woman arrested for pepper spraying cops, firemen

pepper-spraying-copsPETALING JAYA: Police have detained an American woman who used pepper spray on a team of police and firemen at her rented condominium near Mont Kiara, Jalan Dutamas, on Friday.

A team from the Sri Hartamas fire station was sent to the scene at 4.56pm to help police open a condominium unit following a report made by the unit’s owners that their American tenant, who was supposed to move out on Thursday, had pepper-sprayed them.

The unit owner, a married couple, had gone to the unit with a locksmith to change the locks on the doors but were attacked by the woman with pepper spray.

Sentul police chief ACP R Munusamy said the couple then sought assistance from the police and the fire and rescue department.

“As soon as the police and firemen knocked on the door, the woman opened the door and sprayed on all the officers,” the New Straits Times quoted Munusamy as saying.

In a statement yesterday, he said a total of eight policemen and five firemen were affected by the spray and were sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) for treatment.

“A police officer later managed to calm the woman and persuaded her to surrender,” Munusamy said, adding that police seized a spray bottle from the woman who admitted to spraying the officers with it.

Munusamy said the woman would be remanded under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

He added that the United States Embassy had been informed about the case.

City Fire and Rescue Department chief Khirudin Drahman said his men, who were affected by the pepper spray, were sent to HKL for treatment and received outpatient treatment.

“We have handed over the case to police for investigation,” he said.
