Johor crown prince and FAM president says he has contacted FMLLP about the possibility of printing another 1,000 tickets for Kedah supporters
PETALING JAYA: Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim today said he would look into the ticket situation for the Malaysia Cup final following claims that Kedah Umno’s youth wing had distributed tickets to its members to ensure that Menteri Besar Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah would not be booed.
In a statement on the Johor Southern Tigers Facebook page this evening, Tunku Ismail, better known as TMJ, said he would contact the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and Football Malaysia Limited Liability Partnership (FMLLP) about the matter.
“I will be contacting Hamidin Amin, general-secretary of FAM, and Kevin Ramalingam, CEO of FMLLP, to enquire if there are any extra tickets for the Malaysia Cup final to be given to Kedah fans who were not able to obtain tickets,” he said.
“I have contacted FMLLP to look into the possibility of printing an additional 1,000 tickets for the Kedah supporters who have been wronged by certain parties.”
Tunku Ismail, who is president of FAM, added that the relationship between Kedah and Johor fans appeared more tense now than it had been before.
“This is what happens when you have a chief minister who is not firm and who has subordinates who ‘kerja yg bukan bukan’ to create tension between the two parties for their own political gain.
“Kedah and Johor fans should not fight with one another. This is what the politicians want, as this is the political party’s strategy used from before in order to divide and conquer.
“We have to be united to rid elements of politics in football.
“When we fight and are divided, they have everything to gain. My advice to all of you is not to bite their bait,” he said.
Yesterday, PPBM vice-president Mukhriz Mahathir said the tickets for the final match between Kedah and Johor had sold out within an hour as the Kedah Umno youth wing wanted to ensure that only “their people” would turn up.
The Kedah Football Association (KFA) subsequently said there was nothing sinister about the ticket sales, which it claimed had been carried out in a transparent manner.
Ahmad Bashah was sworn in as Kedah menteri besar last February, after Mukhriz relinquished the position.
In March, a video on mukhrizmahathirfc.com showed him being booed by football fans in the stadium during a Super League match between Kedah and Kelantan.
In his post today, Tunku Ismail said football or sports in general had nothing to do with politics.
“I would also like to advise the Umno youth of Kedah to please watch your tongues.
“In football, we should only be enemies on the pitch and not off the pitch. Do not forget where your political party was formed, and learn to respect the institution.
“When you are a politician, your job is to serve and be a servant of the people. You shouldn’t be a politician just to satisfy your personal interests,” he said.
The Malaysia Cup final will be held this Saturday at the Shah Alam stadium.
