Minister: Foreign workers caught for crime not terrorists

Shahidan-Kassim-foreign-workers-1KUALA LUMPUR: Police have not detected any terrorist activity among foreign workers found to be involved in crime in Malaysia, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim said today.

He said they had also not traced any terrorism links among members of the ethnic Rohingya from Myanmar caught for crimes.

He said 78 of the 82 foreign workers detained for crimes so far this year involved Myanmars.

Thirty of them were involved in violence while 48 were involved in property crime, he said.

“We do not have any specific data on criminal activities by Rohingya that pose a security threat to the country,” he told the Dewan Rakyat when replying to a question from Bagan Serai MP Noor Azmi Ghazali.

He also said police only recorded crimes committed by foreign nationals based on their country of origin and not their ethnicity.

He said the authorities were continually monitoring to ensure there were no elements of terrorism among the Rohingya who had mostly fled from violence in the Myanmar state of Rakhine.

Shahidan added that up till Sept 30 this year, 62,153 Rohingya had registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Malaysia.

“Of these, 53,811 were refugees and 8,342 had applied for asylum,” he said.

Only 2,061 had been relocated to a third country by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

According to the UN body, Selangor had the largest Rohingya population in February this year with 13,135 people.

Penang had the second highest number with 10,380, followed by Kedah (6,633), Johor (6,227), Kuala Lumpur (4,694), Terengganu (3,039), Kelantan (2,369), Pahang (1,952), Perak (1,056), Negeri Sembilan (905), Melaka (857), Perlis (156) and Putrajaya (133).

On July 27, the home ministry announced there were 1.78 million foreign workers in Malaysia as of June 30, the majority comprising Indonesians, Nepalis and Bangladeshis.
