PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Airlines may decide on its new CEO at a board meeting expected to be held today, with sources saying it is unlikely to be another foreigner.
The sources told The Star that a succession plan was in place and that the board had a list of potential candidates.
“They (the board) are looking at some internal candidates but certainly the mood is not to hire another foreigner,” they were quoted as saying.
In a surprise announcement on Tuesday, Irish airline Ryanair said Peter Bellew would be leaving Malaysia Airlines after just over a year in charge.
Bellew had joined Malaysia Airlines as chief operations officer in September 2015 and took over as chief executive in July last year.
His predecessor Christoph Mueller was hired by Malaysia Airlines in March 2015 after its reputation and sales were hit by two aircraft losses the previous year.
Despite his successes, Mueller announced in April 2016 that he was leaving Malaysia Airlines two years ahead of his contract, citing unspecified personal reasons beyond his control.
Following Bellew’s resignation, Mass Rapid Transit Corp (MRT Corp) CEO Shahril Mokhtar and Malaysia Airlines chief financial officer Omar Siddiq Amin Noer Rashid were rumoured to be among the top contenders for his position.
The Star added that Malaysia Airlines chief operating officer Izham Ismail is also a likely candidate.
According to the report, the candidates may be subject to approval from Khazanah Nasional Bhd and the government, which are major shareholders.
