It seems that the next generation of students will be equipped with a new set of knowledge, one that may sound odd but definitely practical – road safety education.

The Malaysian Road Safety Department (JKJR) director-general, Datuk Rosli Isa told the New Straits Times that a pilot module will go on trial in 24 primary school nationwide.

The new module will be included in the Bahasa Malaysia subject and will be taught for two study hours per week.

“It involves standard one to standard six pupils. As early preparation, we will also train Bahasa Malaysia teachers to teach the module beginning next year,” he told NST.

The road safety education will kick off in primary schools effective January 2019. The department also plans to expend the module to secondary school students by 2020.

The new module will include graphics, highway codes, safety guidelines including explanation of traffic lights.

According to Rosli, the module was part of JKJR’s campaign to raise more awareness on road safety as 80% of road accidents were attributed to road users’ negligence.
