The 25-year-old student of the Melbourne School of Engineering first caught Malaysia's attention for her breakthrough in superbugs. Her team published a paper in September detailing their method for tackling antibiotic-resistant bacteria with the use of star-shaped structures called structurally nano-engineered anti-microbial peptide polymers (SNAPPs).

Lam Shu Jie's SNAPPs were capable of destroying bacteria by "ripping apart their cell walls". Unlike antibiotics that could harm healthy cells, these star-shaped protein molecules defeat only the superbugs. The discovery is at least five years away from human testing but it's a discovery that "could change the face of modern medicine" according to The Telegraph.

Shu Jie is named in the category "The Healers" along with 13 others who contributed to various fields in medicine. Among them is Raed Al Saleh, the founder of the politically-neutral volunteer group in Syria whose sole job is to protect civilians caught in the war. His team of 3,000 volunteers have saved tens of thousands of lives – civilians, rebels, soldiers, without bias.
