PETALING JAYA: Hindraf head P Waythamoorthy said the country has been in an increasingly downward spiral over the past 10 years, accusing those in power of using their authority and status for personal gain.

“They utilise public funds and impose a massive burden on the public and enterprises in order to stay in power through corruption, collusion, cronyism and nepotism.

“Sagas such as commissions from the Scorpene submarine deal, 1MDB, National Feedlot Corp, Felda and others are clear signs of a kleptocratic government where checks and balances have been compromised,” he said in a statement today, adding that such a situation clearly undermines democracy.

Waythamoorthy, who had served as a deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department between May 2013 and February 2014, lamented the fact it was the people who suffered ultimately when funds were not made available for critical areas.

“By looting the nation’s assets and resources through international or domestic intermediaries, these skewed priorities of greedy autocratic leaders are bleeding the country badly and continue to burden the public.

“This is more so when the people’s needs in various areas such as healthcare, education, housing and employment, requires more attention.”

Waythamoorthy warned that such alleged greed by leaders would continue to pose a threat to the country’s economy and stunt its growth.

In his statement today, he called on Malaysians to unite under Pakatan Harapan to help achieve the changes the country needs.

He said only a change in government can check the “societal haemorrhage caused by kleptocracy”.

“Hindraf urges the people to enter a new phase of introspection, reinvention and rebuilding.

“We must make it incumbent upon all Malaysians to participate in halting the deteriorating state of the nation.

“It is time Malaysians unite to ensure the victory of Pakatan Harapan in the next general election (GE14).”

Waythamoorthy is looking to forge an official relationship with PH, possibly by making Hindraf a fifth component of the opposition pact.

Last month, he had a meeting with PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Both sides agreed that the Indian community is not well represented in PH and that Hindraf can fix this situation.
