KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Najib Razak today said Malaysian Chinese would be in harm’s way if not for the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

He said the BN’s vision for the country ensured that the community and others were safe from terror groups such as the Islamic State (IS).

“If there is no peace in our country, what would happen? The Chinese will be the first to be targeted in this country,” he said.

“That is why we are a moderate government. We are committed to peace and harmony, mutual respect in this country.

“We fight with IS. We make sure that they don’t harm anyone in this country, including the Malaysian Chinese,” he told a gathering organised by MCA at the Putra World Trade Centre here.

Najib then named prominent Malaysian tycoons, saying they were hardworking members of the Chinese community but still needed government support.

“But even as hardworking as you are, as entrepreneurial as you are, you require a government that will open the door for you,” he said.

Meanwhile, MCA president Liow Tiong Lai in his speech said the Chinese wanted political stability.

“After the last general election, some people asked – what more do the Chinese want?

“The Chinese community works hard and has contributed like all races to ensure the country is stable and progressive, so they must be respected, recognised and appreciated because they too are patriotic to the nation,” he said as quoted by Bernama.

“They never questioned when the government helped the bumiputera and other poor communities, but also helped the poor Chinese.”
