DAP’s Gobind Singh Deo says there has been no response from the agency despite an application to register as a coalition having been submitted on July 28.
PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) may take the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to court if it fails to respond to the opposition pact’s application to register as a political entity, DAP legal bureau chief Gobind Singh Deo said today.
The Puchong MP said the PH parties had made the application to ROS on July 28 and had yet to hear from the agency.
“On August 21, 2017, we wrote again to ROS asking for a meeting to discuss the application. There was no response to that letter either,” he said in a statement.
He added that they then sent ROS a notice on Oct 25, asking for a response to the application within 14 days of receipt of the letter.
Gobind said the ROS’ newly promoted director-general Surayati Ibrahim should reply to the letters and provide an update on the status of the application.
“Silence is simply not acceptable. We do not want a repeat of what happened in the case of the DAP where it took ROS four years to respond,” he said.
“ROS should respond to our notice. If not, we may need to consider court proceedings to compel a response instead,” he added.
In a parliamentary reply earlier today, the home ministry had said that the application was still being evaluated, and there was no additional criteria or conditions being imposed.
“The RoS is responsible to look into every application by political parties in detail to ensure the people’s interests are protected,” it had said in replying to PKR’s Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin.
Sim had asked for the reasons for the delay and whether any additional criteria was needed to be fulfilled.
PH had submitted its draft constitution to the RoS on July 24 and its logo on July 28. However, ROS instructed PH to use the full name “Pakatan Harapan”, instead of just “Harapan” in its logo.
The coalition, which consists of DAP, PKR, Amanah and PPBM, then amended the logo and submitted the new version to complement its earlier application.
